More than a dozen organizations across the city and county are collaborating to launch the first annual Charlotte Clean and Green (CC&G), an annual community-wide event designed to inspire, educate, and help you practice living more Green in your everyday life. This unprecedented event is more than passive education; it will provide an entertaining and attractive setting for you and your family to gain specific knowledge on making life changes to help the environment that are easy and economically smart.

And best of all, most of it is free! So come out to green your mind with free classes and presentations, exhibits from green vendors, a Hands-On Green exhibit of green building technology and a lunch of locally grown, organic food!

Communities across the country are taking notice and creating initiatives that engage individuals to be a part of environmental social change. As a leading city and county in the US, Charlotte–Mecklenburg strives to be at the forefront of this change.

Friday, April 18 – USGBC Charlotte Region Chapter Workshops

8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The US Green Building Council Charlotte Region Chapter will host a series of green workshops for builders and other professionals on Friday, April 18.

Saturday, April 19 – Education Festival

8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) with its nature rich quad area looking toward uptown Charlotte is the perfect setting for this festival!

A host of activities are planned including a wide selection of classes on how to Go Green. In addition, More than 30 exhibitors and vendors are expected to participate and demonstrate energy saving / green products, share information and provide education. The Community Culinary School and CPCC's Culinary Club will join well known Charlotte chefs to engage in demonstrations and education to highlight local/organic food, offering lunch at a nominal cost for those attending.

Kilowatt Ours

Monday, April 21 – Screening of Kilowatt Ours

7:30 pm

Up and coming filmmaker Jeff Barrie will host a public screening of his documentary – “Kilowatt Ours” at CPCC’s Halton Theatre at 7:30 PM. The film documents Barrie’s 8 – month journey across the southeast United States, where more than six tons of coal are burned to generate electricity for the average home annually. Barrie takes viewers from our light switches at home to the sources of our energy, examining social and environmental consequences such as global warming, mountain top removal, air pollution, childhood asthma and mercury contamination. His ultimate goal is to present viewers with an ambitious plan for shifting America's energy paradigm towards conservation and renewable power.

The first 50 people to register to attend Kilowatt Ours will receive a free CFL at the evening event. One lucky winner will win a Certificate from Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation and from HAWK (Habitat and Wildlife Keepers), a certificate valid for two free adult Segway guided tours of Latta Plantation’s Nature Preserve. Hands-On

Hands-On Green

Charlotte Clean and Green has partnered with the Appalachian State University Energy Center and Dept. of Technology to present the Hands-On Green experience, a collection of exhibits staffed with experts in the field of green building and renewable energy technologies. Hands-On Green will allow visitors to “touch and feel” green technologies and learn about ENERGY STAR homes and appliances, lighting retrofits, green construction materials, and renewable technologies such as photovoltaics, solar thermal, wind, hydro, and biofuels. The Hands-On Green experience, a star attraction at Charlotte Clean and Green will be open both Friday, April 18th and Saturday, April 19th. Be sure not to miss the opportunity to talk with the experts from Appalachian State’s Energy Center for accurate and up to date information on how you can go green.

Key partners in this initiative include the following:

Central Piedmont Community College and its Center for Sustainability are committing thousands of dollars in-kind through the use of their campus and facilities. CPCC faculty and staff will be important contributors with the participation of their Center for Sustainability, Culinary Institute, and the Construction Institute, as well as participation from science, engineering and IT departments. CPCC's Marketing Team, Student Life and the staff of the Futures Institute are all part of the Charlotte Clean & Green Team.

US Green Building Council Charlotte Region Chapter has recently been added as a major partner in the event. They will be conducting workshops for building professionals to grow residential green building awareness and “how to” in the region. In addition, USGBC Charlotte Region Chapter will help publicize CC&G through its members and professional contacts.

USGBC Charlotte Region Chapter is a 501 (c) 3 organization and as such qualifies to receive funds supporting the Charlotte Clean & Green event.

The Central Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club with more than 2500 members locally was the concept originator for Charlotte Clean and Green and will be sponsoring several components of the event as well as providing volunteers and helping to drive attendance.

The Charlotte Green Team and the Solid Waste Division of Mecklenburg County are on board to help make sure that to the extent possible, waste generated by the event is either recycled or composted.

Charlotte Center City Partners is committed to helping the CC&G Steering Committee achieve success and is participating by lending advice on all aspects of the project, especially media communications plans and food logistics.
